On May 11, 1988 a fire destroyed the third floor of the Cabildo, one of the principal buildings of the Louisiana State
Museum. In the following years, the architects of the New Orleans firm Koch and Wilson, along with construction crews, labored
over this national historic landmark's restoration. Although the Cabildo fire was tragic, it did present opportunities for
an archaeological dig in the courtyard directly behind the historic landmark.
